One of the biggest developments in sports betting in the US this week was the announcement that FanDuel made a deal with Associated Press (AP) by becoming the official rate provider of the news agency.
What's this?
In the latest release Legal Sports Report The presenters discussed the FanDuel agreement with AP and expressed their hope that this agreement will reduce the use of illegal offshore operators by US media agencies as a source of content.
Who is this?
Adam Candy , co-host, Legal Sports Report
Dustin Hooker , Head of Content, Legal Sports Report
Matt Brown , Managing Editor, Legal Sports Report
What do they say?
Commenting on the agreement between FanDuel and the Associated Press, Candy said: “Local news is being cut everywhere. Local content production is declining across the board. The reliance on AP content is only growing in the United States, so the reach of this deal could be huge.”
He added: “We are not saying that the offshore market should be closed, there is a place in the world for the offshore market. Regarding this discussion, most journalists do not understand what is a legal bookmaker and what is an illegal offshore one.”
Hooker: “There is no compromise for journalists who cite what is acting illegally as the source of something happening, especially next to the legal and regulated sportsbooks that are increasingly operating across the country. They are not really interested in betting content, they are interested in odds as content. It's content that people want to consume, so people write about it because it's interesting content."
Continuing, he added, “The thing is, this is the beginning of the normalization of managed sports betting in the United States, now we see FanDuel as a source of AP content, other people will start doing that. I tell people to use bookmakers in their state as a betting source, as long as they operate legally within the jurisdiction.”
“It starts us down the path. I applaud this deal from the point of view that we are starting to get closer to the path where this is not normalized in the media where they refer to bookmakers that do not operate legally in the United States.”
