GambleAware announces tender for £500,000 research project

GambleAware has begun the bidding process for two new research projects focusing on the experience of women and minorities with gambling-related harm.

These projects, each with a £250,000 grant, aim to address critical identified research gaps in understanding risky gambling and its impact on these groups.

Since men make up almost 80% of all players in the UK, there is little specific data on women and this project is trying to remedy that.

There is also data pointing to participation in gambling and the percentage of women suffering from gambling addiction is growing faster than among men, but the reasons for this are not clear.

The project aims to develop a gendered approach to women and gambling, taking into account things like interventions, treatments, and how women are represented in gambling ads.

Women and people from minority communities are also more likely to be "affected by others" - those who report being negatively affected by someone else's gambling behavior.

Evidence also suggests that people from ethnic minority communities are less likely to access specialized gambling harm services compared to white communities.

This research project will aim to address this stigma as well as the potential barriers to treatment faced by people in this group.

GambleAware said it would welcome tenders from "consortiums and multidisciplinary teams" that could include research agencies and/or academics and institutions.

The charity suggested that potentially winning applications use a mixed methods, interdisciplinary and multisectoral approach to achieve the goals of the research programs.

Knowledge gained from these projects will be used to inform GambleAware implementation methods.

“This will ensure that bespoke services and interventions are accessible to women and prevent and reduce the heavy burden of gambling-related harm among minorities,” the charity added.

There will be two bidding engagement events in May and the deadline for applications is June 7th.
