Kahlil Philander: treatment initiatives must be adapted as required

As more and more operators highlight the importance of responsible gambling initiatives , guests of the Kahlil Philander podcast discussed the importance of ensuring that different initiatives and treatment programs are tailored to the needs of different groups.

Who is this?

Moderator - Dr Sally Gainsbury , director of the gambling treatment and research clinic at the University of Sydney.

A guest - Dr. Simone Rodda , Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychology and Public Health, University of Auckland

A guest - Dr Minal Jain , Recover Me

What do they say?

Explaining in detail why she believes that responsible gaming initiatives should be “adapted, not scaled down,” Dr. Rodda said: “What seems to have happened over the past two years is that we have developed packages that take a long time to develop. done in person or face to face.

“Then we reduced that number for people with low to moderate levels of gambling or those who have behavioral conditions with no other comorbidities and what happens is they don't follow the program. They can start, do one or two modules, and then they leave. There is a lot of evidence that they are not suitable for this purpose.”

She concluded by saying, "It's really about tailoring things to what we're trying to do, rather than cutting things down."

Agreeing with Dr. Rodda's point of view regarding individualized treatment, Dr. Jane added: “This is something we have also discovered throughout our journey – it is about attracting the right categories of users. But equally, what we consider very important is the patient choice that manifests itself in all areas. When we see people receiving primary health care for depression or anxiety, we can offer them many treatment options.

“What we are doing at the NHS is we are using a step by step model of care which can take the form of improving access to psychological therapy which can take the form of digital tools or face to face and if they need more intensive programs we can refer them to specialized tertiary centers that can offer this.”
