Industry Eye travels overseas as operators enter new markets

In the latest release Industry Eye Ed Pownall studied international developments as the three major betting operators set their sights on the markets of Australia, the US and the Indian subcontinent.

The first operator looking for overseas growth was DraftKings , which expressed interest in exploring India, where the popularity of fantasy sports began to rise to new heights.

Pownall commented: “It really gives them a USP against other carriers and it's a huge market for sure, but I think I'd put down a few more roots in the US before fighting on multiple fronts. It's the right idea, but not quite right for me yet."

Paddy Power - although not the operator himself, but son of founder David Power Paddy Power - working on break into the US betting market with the American SportZ Exchange sports trading platform (ASX).

The Irish-based startup will be funded through a €500,000 crowdfunding campaign using Dublin-based Spark Crowdfunding platform, based on a €4.5 million valuation.

Describing the theme of the platform, Pownall said, “Players buy or sell virtual shares based on their performance. Luckily, this mafia is funded and run by an old colleague of mine and Veteran Racing Post - almost 2000 years - Mike Griffin so they are in good hands and well supported.”

The third and final company to continue its international expansion was Sportradar , which acquired the company this week InteractSport, specializing in cricket data.

This takeover increased its presence not only in the sport of cricket, but also in Australia, where its new asset is based, as well as in the Indian subcontinent.

“I think what we often forget is that in India and Pakistan, as well as their huge populations both at home and abroad, cricket is an extremely popular sport,” Pownall said. "I think that sounds like a smart move from the radar mafia to me."
