IBIA to Focus on Basketball in Q1 2021 Report

International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has released its Q1 2021 report focusing on the basketball warning between 2017 and 2020.

By releasing its data, IBIA revealed that affiliates had given it access to 50,000 matches over a three-year period, recording just nine suspicious alerts.

This equates to one warning for every 5400 matches, with only 0.02% of matches showing suspicious betting activity.

In contrast, tennis, esports and football accounted for 75% of the 64 warnings reported in the first quarter of 2021, which is 18, 17 and 12 respectively.

However, the organization stressed that the figure is “broadly similar to the 68 cases reported in the fourth quarter of 2020 and the 61 cases reported in the first quarter of 2020.

After the above three sports, table tennis accounted for seven cases, followed by basketball with five and volleyball with four, while only one involved horse racing.

Table tennis, in particular, was marked as a significant decrease from 26 warnings registered in the second quarter of 2020, with seven warnings reported remaining consistent with those for the third and fourth quarters of 2020.

In addition, Europe and Asia were identified as the continents where the most suspicious betting alerts come from, accounting for 66% of the total cases.

A quarter of the warnings were issued in Russia and Bulgaria - 10 and six respectively, while in general the cases were distributed across 20 different countries.
