Gambling Law Review: Its main motivation is to protect the people

As the UK government moves forward with its revision of the gambling 2005 , a ban on agreements between professional clubs and betting operators is considered a likely outcome of the proceedings.

What's this?

In conversation with Michael Jackson of Elite Sports Marketing Sean Simmonds , managing director Superstar Digital , discussed the links between the overhaul of UK gambling laws and the sports sponsorship sector.

What do they say?

"I'll take you back to 2005," Simmonds said. “So basically the main piece of regulation in the betting and gambling industry is the Gambling Act of 2005, which completely changed the game in terms of allowing sponsorship by giving it a green light, but that was 16 years ago.

“Obviously, over the years, this legislation has been updated and parts have been added to it. Compared to buying a car, if you bought a car 16 years ago, you have new brake pads, you've changed tires a few times, but 16 years later they no longer fit what they're supposed to do. When you consider that back in 2005 the industry was focused on retail, we had a surge in online betting, now there are gaming markets, mobile apps – the world has changed.

“This has been welcomed with open arms by people in the industry and those who are campaigning against it, and this is a good opportunity to speed up the process. His main motivation is to protect people. Clearly there is a problem with gambling in the UK market and this is a good opportunity to resolve any issues and introduce new procedures and legislation to protect people.

“It is suggestive – what will this review entail? What will be the impact of this review? There was a call for evidence to get as much evidence as possible in terms of what effect sponsorship has on gambling addiction, such as "does it normalize gambling addiction for children?"
